The company has its foundations in 1946, and the vision of 27 year-old widow and mother Beate Uhse. Developed from her recognition of the need for women’s rights in post-war Germany, informal sex education advice soon developed into the famous ‘Schrift X’, an advisory leaflet on the rhythm method of contraception.

‘Schrift X’ sold 32,000 copies in its first year and, by 1948, a mail-order business was started and later editions included lingerie and condoms. Four years later, it had grown to an 8-page catalogue describing books on sexual enlightenment, condoms and creams, all for use by married couples, with nothing described in explicit detail.

In 1962 the world’s very first sex shop was opened by the company in Flensburg, northern Germany. Sensitively named "The Institute for Marital Hygiene", the product range included lingerie, magazines, books, contraceptives, pharmaceutical preparations and ‘products to stimulate.’

Ten years later, the young widow had grown into an intelligent and business-savvy entrepreneur. Due to the immense demands of a loyal customer base, she was now the owner of a chain of 25 adult stores in Germany. In 1981, the company was divided into separate business sections for mail-order/distribution and shops/wholesale.

Several key acquisitions of other retail and mail-order operations followed and, by the time of her death in 2001, Beate had created the number one player in the European erotic industry. The company shares had now been traded on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, and stores were open in several countries across Europe.

Today, the company Beate built from her first education leaflet now consists of 150 retail stores and websites in 10 countries.
